The 5 Character Strengths of People Living with Anxiety

If you’re living with anxiety chances are you kinda scoff at the idea of anxiety and character strengths.

A particularly nasty effect of anxiety is self-doubt and sometimes self-hatred so having any type of anxiety disorder often over a period of time leads people to very much believe that their anxiety actually defines who they are and that’s not remotely correct or true but that’s an understandable thought given how overpowering anxiety really is and really can be but actually it’s a faulty one.

So people living with anxiety have many character strengths that truly are part of who they actually are. Anxiety can take control of our thoughts, feelings and our behaviours to such a degree that we don’t see or believe in all of the positive character strengths that we actually have. So anxiety is only one small part of who somebody really is. Finding and embracing our character strengths is a powerful way for you to actually rise above your anxiety and loosen its grip on your life.

Here are 5 of the many character strengths of people living with anxiety ..

► Anxiety actually hones these five character strengths and the first is ‘Courage’.

It takes a great amount of bravery, persistence and resilience to live and function in the world despite anxiety. Sometimes people living with anxiety can’t even leave their own house but that doesn’t diminish their courage, so they’re up and they’re trying and they’re doing what they can to overcome debilitating anxiety. No matter what the type of anxiety, it is courageous to persist rather than to give up.

► The second and you may not think it but the second is ‘Moderation’

So often when living with panic disorder or anxiety attacks people feel that they are losing control or going crazy and additionally the ‘what ifs’ and imagined scenarios that can plague people living with anxiety can make inner and outer life feel completely out of control. The feelings and the thoughts are very real but rather than being out of control people living with anxiety have a high degree of control which often falls under the umbrella of the character strength moderation. It takes a high degree of self-control to survive a panic attack especially if you’re in public and it takes an inhuman amount of self-control to resist all of the ‘what-ifs’, the fears and the worries. People living with anxiety definitely are high in the characters strength of moderation and self-control.

► The third is what we call ‘Transcendence’ and this character strength includes a sense of hope.

People living with anxiety tend to be very hopeful people, hopeful when everything seems lost and hopeless . Transcendence and hope are indeed character strengths of people living with anxiety. Anxiety disorders are very wearing on the person, sometimes it feels like it won’t end but that doesn’t mean that someone is hopeless, it means they’re frustrated, those are two very different things. When someone with anxiety keeps seeking information, keeps reading books and visiting websites just like Anxious Minds, when he or she takes little steps every day and picks themselves up, dusts themselves off and starts all over again this person living with anxiety has hope and resilience.

► The fourth is ‘Curiosity’

When anxiety is in our head, in our brain we’re using the character strengths ‘curiosity’ those ‘what-ifs’ and imagine scenarios, those racing thoughts or signs of intelligence creativity and curiosity, granted anxiety takes them and uses them against us often stopping us in our tracks. This doesn’t change the fact that people living with anxiety have the character strength of curiosity, this means that we can use our strength in beating anxiety. We can take one of anxieties thoughts and turn it around.

► The fifth is ‘Kindness’

Anxiety or social anxiety disorder in particular can make people very afraid of being judged. Anxiety says everyone hates me or anxiety says everyone’s looking at me, whether it’s fear of judgment, fear of what if it’s coming true, fear of panicking in public or other anxieties, sometimes people living with anxiety avoid people and places. This is an action of anxiety rather than an aloofness of some description or an indifference or an uncaring nature. Anxiety could stem from caring too much, the character strength of kindness is often found in people with anxiety so if you can try and remember that living with anxiety is something you do character strengths or who you actually are, the two are very different.
